'Winning the first two games gives confidence': Imran Tahir shows optimism after Super Kings beat Super Giants in SA20

Imran Tahir showcased his brilliance at 45, helping the Joburg Super Kings (JSK) secure a 28-run victory over Durban’s Super Giants in their SA20 clash on Tuesday. The veteran spinner’s stunning diving catch to dismiss Wiaan Mulder epitomised JSK’s determination and energy.
Reflecting on the moment, Tahir said, “I’m just pleased I took that catch for the team. There is a lot of effort behind the scenes during fielding sessions, which not many people see. It’s rewarding when hard work pays off in front of the crowd during a professional game.”

Tahir was quick to credit the spin trio of Tabraiz Shamsi, Donovan Ferreira, and himself for dismantling the opposition’s batting lineup. “As a spin bowler in modern cricket, you don’t really have much in your favour – small boundaries, flat wickets, big bats, and skilled players,” he explained. “We just keep things simple and go with our plans. We bowl to our batters in practice and ask them where it’s tough to face us, and we try to implement that in matches. Shamsi is right – spinners can spoil the party, and we hope this form continues till the end.”

JSK’s second consecutive win has created a wave of optimism within the camp. “Winning the first two games gives confidence to every player,” Tahir said. “We had a great seven-to-eight-day camp in Johannesburg, even with the rain. We trained indoors and outdoors whenever we could. It’s nice to see the rewards coming, and we’re building momentum for our next game against Pretoria Capitals.”
On the conditions at Kingsmead, Tahir noted, “The pitch had been under covers for two days due to bad weather, so it was a bit sticky early on. But the ball came on better in the second half. As a bowling group, we did exceptionally well, especially against batters like Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen, who are among the best in the world.”

Tahir also shared insights into the JSK team culture. “We’ve been sleeping better every day since joining the camp. This isn’t just a franchise; it’s family. Everyone is very supportive, and I’ve been lucky to be part of this setup for many years. Beating Durban at home is a significant win because they play very well here. It was a great team effort, and we’re confident moving forward.”
The Super Kings’ early-season form and the leadership of experienced players like Tahir are setting the stage for a promising SA20 campaign.
