Ranjani Srinivasan, an Indian doctoral student Columbia universityHamas has left the United States after canceling his visa for alleged support.
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that they used the CBP Home app for Self-DPPOR on March 11, 2025. His visa was canceled by the state department on 5 March due to security concerns. Homeland security secretary Christie Nom defended the decision, stating that those who support violence and terrorism should not be allowed to live in the US.
The US government accused Srinivasan of advocating violence and supporting Hamas. While the authorities have not provided specific details, his visa was canceled as part of the comprehensive effort to investigate foreign students involved in Palestinian activism.
Why did he make self-reliance?
The CBP home app launched as part of Trump-era’s immigration policy allows non-non-citizens to process its voluntary departure from the US. Srinivasan used this facility after his visa cancellation. This step comes when the US government increases the investigation on foreign students participating in Palestinian activism.
The Columbia Spectator reports that the CBP Home App is a modified version of the CBP One app, initially launched during the last month of Donald Trump in October 2020. The Biden administration later expanded the CBP One to help the shelter seekers schedule immigration appointments. When the Trump returned to the office, his administration re-prepared the app to include a self-reliance facility.
