Tulsi Gabbard, United States President Donald Trump’s pick as the new Director of National Intelligence (DNI)has been confirmed for the role by the Senate in a close 52-48 vote.
Trump’s choice of Gabbard to head intelligence, faced tough questions ahead of the vote because she has no spy experience and has expressed controversial sympathies before — for Edward Snowden, Syria and Russia.
Gabbard, a 43-year-old former Democrat, had faced bipartisan questions about her past statements seen as supporting U.S. adversaries, and her lack of experience.
From Iraq Vet, to Conspiracy Theories
A four-term Congresswoman, 2020 presidential candidate and NYT bestselling author, Gabbard, 43, is a veteran with three deployments to war zones in the Middle East and Africa. She recently moved from being a Democrat to a Republican member.
In October 2022, she announced she was leaving the Democrat Party, and becoming an Independent.
On August 26, 2024, Gabbard formally endorsed Trump for a second term and soon after began serving as co-chair of his transition team.
On October 22, 2024, she joined the Republican Party because of President-elect Trump’s leadership and how he has been able to transform the Republican Party, bringing it back to the party of the people and the party of peace.
