The UK called Trump Tariff disappointing, but does not retaliate

London – The British government on Wednesday called the Trump administration’s tariff “disappointing” on global steel and aluminum imports, but said it would not implement anti -retaliation measures.

However, Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds did not deny future tariffs on US imports and said “he would continue to engage closely and productively with the US to suppress the case for UK’s business interests.”

Reynolds said, “We will put all the options on the table and will not hesitate to answer in the national interest.”

Treasury Minister James Murray said, stating Times Radio: “We reserve our right to retaliate.”

Britain is not part of the European Union, which announced import taxes on US goods on Wednesday, which included Trump’s move from steel and aluminum to borbon, peanut butter and jeans.

The Center-Left UK Prime Minister Kir Stmper has worked to have a strong relationship with President Donald Trump, in the hope of avoiding tariffs on several other American business partners.

After a meeting at the White House last month, Trump and the stormer said their governments would work on sealing the elusive US-UK trade deal for a long time.

Reynolds stated that the government “focuses on a practical approach and is rapidly interacting with the US on a comprehensive economic agreement to eliminate additional tariffs and benefit the UK businesses and our economy.”

The tariff is a new blow to the Britain’s once-Myti Steel Industry, dramatically shrunk from the 1970s summit and is now 0.1% of the economy. Thousands of jobs are going to be lost in the country’s largest steelwork at Port Talbot in Wales, as the owner Tata Steel has tried to make the unnecessary plant lean and greenery.

Trade Body UK Steel said in 2024, Britain exported 180,000 MT (198,000 US tonnes) steel to the United States, by about 7% of the total steel exports of the UK and by 9% price. The aluminum industry says that the US market accounts for 10% of the UK exports.
