Atteletico Madrid coach Diego Shimon on Wednesday fledged with rivals Real Madrid’s decision to take out the spot kick of Julian Alveraz in a penalty shootout to get out of the Champions League.
Real won the shootout 4–2, which was to proceed to the quarter-finals after a breathtaking final-16 tie, which ended 2–2 after a total of 1–0 win on Wednesday.
During the shootout, Alvarez slipped and the groom noticed that his left leg touched the ball a bit, before he kicked him with his right. With the permission of only one touch, the fine, which would have tightened the shootout 2–2, was chalked.
Simeone was disappointed with the referee Szymon Marciniak’s decision, saying that he was not yet seen an image that decisively showed that Alvarez touched the ball twice.
“I have ever asked to review the fine in a firing … never!” Argentina told a press conference.
“Did you see him touching the ball twice?
“I do not see anyone raising with my hand, so I have to say all this … next question.”
Shimon said he was proud of his players despite a hearty defeat and hoped that he could host the title rivals Barcelona in Laliga on Sunday.
Only one point separates the three largest clubs in Spain in one of the nearest Laliga title races in recent years, leading the pack at 57 points, ahead of the Real Madrid, a second place with the round gap with Atlatico Madrid in third place at 56 points. Barca has a game in both hands.
“We will see if this necklace will spend us to move forward, it is not easy to digest the way we went out,” Shimon said.
“We have a great opponent on Sunday. I am sure Barka wanted us to go on extra time. We will come in the tired game, we will be beaten after competing on how to compete tonight, but we will give it to what we have received on Sunday.
“Our fans got angry at home, but knowing that their team gave everything. There is a way to think very badly, but this team was entitled to applause. It was a beautiful evening but unfortunately we did not go. I go home in necklace, but in peace … ”
