According to a regulatory filing, the cable outlet Newsmax media has paid a $ 40 million to settle the allegations that have defamed Smartmatic to settle the allegations that the voting machine company helped Donald Trump in the 2020 American election for Joe Biden.
The companies had compromised privately last year, but on 7 March, the amount was revealed in a newsmax investor document.
Representatives of Newsmax and Smartmatic did not immediately respond to the emails seeking comments.
In 2021, Smartmatic filed a suit on Newsmax, alleging that it incorrectly broadcasts incorrect information, claiming that the company switchs votes in the 2020 presidential election, that its machines were hacked and funded by corrupt dictators.
Smartmatic alleged that Newsmax made profits from its false reporting. Trump extended newsmax reporting on social media and broadcaster audience jumped 10 times after the election, vault it on cable news rivals such as CNBC and Fox Business, according to Nielson Ratings.
Newsmax said it had the first amendment right to report claims by Trump and his supporters, which were often made in the court filing challenging the election.
The company clarified its reporting about Smartmatic in December 2020 and invited the Smartmatic representatives to the newsmax audiences to come into the air to explain their side of the story. Smartmatic did not accept that invitation.
Smartmatic did not publicly estimate the loss at stake, but Newsmax told the court on 16 September that the voting machine company was demanding $ 400 million to $ 600 million.
Smartmatic has sued Fox News in New York for $ 2.7 billion on 2020 election coverage of that conservative network.
Fox last year agreed to settle the defamation claims at $ 787.5 million by Dominion Voting Systems, stating that legal experts stated that there was the largest defamation agreement by an American media company in history.
