The 1,600-year-old Jewish bath, also known as Mikway, was recently exposed to Italy-and the address is the oldest of its kind in Europe.
On 10 March, Italian officials announced the discovery, which was found in the last summer at the archaeological site of the Ostia Antika.
In a statement translated from Italian to English, the Ostia Antica Archaeological Park described Mikway as “a well down with a small semi-underground room”.

Photos released by the authorities show the ancient stairs that were once used as a ritual bath. According to the statement, “remarkable marks of wear” shows, and “two masonry covered with hydraulic plaster are flicked by shoulders.”
The statement said, “In the north-eastern corner, just above the northern abuse, there is one through the hole in the masonry, perhaps the intention to give a pipeline to a pipeline for water supply,” the statement states.

The diameter of the well measures about 3.5 feet and “crown by a brick ring that is probably added later, is definitely intended for the collection of groundwater.”
As archaeologists dug deeply, they also exposed a lamp since the 5th or 6th century AD – almost the same age as Mikway.
The lamp was decorated with an image of a menorah and a lulv, or a combing branch of Sukkot attached to the Jewish holiday – and a combination of all the above discoveries indicated the use of the site as a mikway.
The statement said, “Walls covered with hydraulic plaster, the presence of a groundwater collection well … and the discovery of a lamp with Jewish symbols on the bottom of the well … inspires us to hypothesize its interpretation as a Jewish ritual bath,” the statement says.

“Intention to dive people (but objects also) for purifications, (Mikvehs) Generally appears as rectangular basins, in most cases, dug into the ground and covered with hydraulic plaster, with a line of a line that occupies their entire width, directly or indirectly connected to a spring, a well or a rainwater collection tank, described in the press release.
Mikway is used by Jews to achieve rituals purity, such as during religious conversion, cleaning the pot or while preparing for marriage. The latest discovery is the only ancient Roman-era Mikway found in Europe.
The only other ancient Mikway in Europe is located in Palazo Bianca in Sirrakuse, Sicily, which was “possibly built near the local synagogue between the 6th and 7th century AD,” the release “. It ranks it after the collapse of Rome in 476 AD, which appears to the Ostia Antiguteer in the east.

Although some ancient Mikaves survive in Europe, they were undoubtedly present. Historians say that the decline of Mivakeh for Roman oppression of Jews in the first century may be indicated.
