In dramatic fashion, the House Republican passed a bill to fund the government by the end of September 2025 – a major victory for speaker Mike Johnson, which has previously trusted the Democrats for bipartite support to stop a shutdown.
The House voted for 217-213 to pass the expenditure bill, known as a constant resolution, before running some funding before some funding. Now it goes to the Senate where it requires 60 votes to pass.

The expenditure bill was a major test for Johnson. In the absence of democratic support, Johnson could only risk losing a Republican vote, before another defection killed the bill.
In a statement after the vote, Johnson said that the Republicans “stood for the American people” and exploded Democrats, who said “decided to double the partisan politics.”
Johnson had an important ally in Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who advocated the House Republican to support before the vote.
In the last hours before Tuesday’s vote, Trump worked on the phone, reaching the House Republican, which remained unspecified.
