Regulation
The BCCI has expanded its player replacement policy, allowing teams to bring in the option of players facing season-ending injuries or diseases. The governing body has revised the rules for the current season, which expands the replacement window up to the 12th league stability compared to the previous range, which allowed a change in the seventh match only.
Eligibility of a replacement player
To become a replacement player, a player must ensure that his name is seen in the available player Pool (RAPP) list registered for that season. Additionally, their full-season league fee based on full availability should not be below their self-declared reserved value as specified in the RApp list.
The bowlers on the rap listed as a net bowlers by a specific franchise may also demand replacement for their injured players by other franchisees. The compensation for a replacement player is overshadowed by the league fee that is due to the replacement of the original player.
The rule especially reads: “If a replacement player is recruited during a season, the league fee he actually paid during the relevant season will reduce to take care of the franchise matches, which happened before it was registered and the player under the contract.”
What about salary cap?
According to the BCCI rule book, “Any replacement player signed on this paragraph 6 will be ignored for the purpose of the pay cap for that season. If a replacement player’s contract is extended according to his conditions, then the league fee for the player for the later season will be charged for the relevant season.”
In any case, the squad size of the franchise may not exceed 25 players.
The rule further states, “To avoid doubt, if a franchise expands a replacement player’s contract, he will be considered as any other player for any relevant latter season, squad composition regulations and salary hats for the purpose of salaries.”
If a replacement is sought for a player in the middle of the season, which has already played a game, then the rules say that …
i) The said injury or disease occurs during or before the 12th league match of the team concerned during the season;
ii) A doctor nominated by BCCI confirmed that the injury or disease season was ending (ie, the player will not fit the match by the end of the season (including the playoffs).
iii) The player will be available for all the remaining matches in the season
iv) As a result of injury or disease, the player will recall the remaining league matches in that season.
NB: In such circumstances, the player who is replaced, he cannot play for franchise again in any match during the relevant season.
