US President Donald Trump welcomed the Irish Prime Minister Mitchell Martin for the annual St. Patrick Day celebrations at the White House on Wednesday, where he added Ireland to the list of countries that say they are taking advantage of the United States.
Martin counters Ireland’s contribution to America
This was the meeting of Trump’s first oval office with a foreign leader, as recently, sitting with Ukrainian President Volodimier Zelanski, which turned into a match screaming, as he incited him to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The session asked to leave Zelansky to leave the White House ended.
Martin, who offered only a soft pushback for some of Trump’s comments, returned to the White House in the evening and quickly presented Trump with a bowl of Shemrock. St. Patrick’s Day CelebrationBoth also participated in an annual lunch in the capital.
During the meeting of the Oval Office, President’s feast also touched the recent steps for Vice President JD Vance’s Shemrock-Theme Moje and Trump Nemesis Rosie O’Donel’s Ireland.
Republican Presidents are spreading equally over trade with US colleagues and opponents, slapping double -digit tariffs on imports from Canada to China and in between countries. During the appearance with Martin, Trump reiterated his claim that the European Union was made only to stick to America
Asked if a member of the European Union was taking advantage of Ireland, also, Trump said, “Of course they are. I have great respect for Ireland and what they did and they should do just what they did, but the United States should not have allowed this to happen.” He was referring to the concentration of American pharmaceutical companies in Ireland due to the tax policies of the country.
Trump said, “We had an idiot leader. We had leaders who had no clues or they say they were not a businessman, but they had no clue what was happening and suddenly we have pharmaceutical companies in Ireland,” said Trump.
Martin stated that the trade relationship is “a two-way road,” saying that Ireland’s two largest airlines buy more aircraft from Boeing Company than anyone else outside the US.
Martin said that more than 700 Irish companies are also based in the US, making thousands of jobs. “This is a small known fact that does not turn into data,” he said.
“I think where you are coming from, completely,” Martin said to Trump, “But I think it’s a relationship we can develop and it will bear it in the future.”
At one point, Trump got distracted as he talked about inflation in America
“By the way, I love these socks. What is with these socks? I am trying to be focused, but I am very impressed with VP’s socks,” Trump said, pulling the chakli from others in the room.
Vance wore socks with small green shemrock as a node to visit Martin.
When a reporter asked Martin why his country would allow O’ -Donel to go there, Trump jumped into the inauguration.
“I like that question,” the President said, Martin “was better than not to know better about O’Donnell”.
O’Donnell, a comedian and former talk-sho host, and Trump has been quarreling for years. O’Donnell, who is gay, recently announced that she moved to Ireland in January, citing lack of equal rights in the US.
Trump secretly found his penchant for a professional fight in the discourse.
As a wrap of the meeting, Trump was asked to name his favorite person in Ireland. Trump partially referred to the Irish mixed martial arts fighter Connar McGragger, as “he has got the best tattoo ever.”
Trump is known for his support for the Ultimate Fighting Championship and participated in matches during the 2024 President’s campaign.
He said that Martin’s father was a acclaimed boxer, but motion to Martin, saying, “You are very smooth,” suggesting that he did not look like a boxer.
“I am a very good defensive boxer,” Martin joked in response.
