Belgian prosecutors said on Thursday, they had allegedly detained several persons from suspected bribe in the European Parliament for the benefit of Huawei, China.

Belgian investigators discovered 21 complexes in Belgium and Portugal on Thursday morning. A judge had requested that the offices of two parliamentary assistants be sealed, federal prosecutors said.

Huawei said that it took the allegations seriously and would communicate immediately with the authorities to fully understand the situation.

“Huawei has a zero tolerance policy towards corruption or other wrongdoings, and we are committed to following all the applied laws and rules at all times,” said this.

Belgian prosecutors stated that alleged corruption had become “very prudent” under the guise of commercial lobbying since 2021 and was involved to pay for political positions or excessive gifts such as food and travel expenses or regular invitations for football matches.

“The alleged bribery has benefited Huawei,” the statement by the prosecutors said.

The European Parliament said that it has received a request from Belgium officials to assist in the investigation and would be faster and fully complied with it.

The prosecutors said that a suspect in France was also arrested.

He did not disclose the names or information of the people involved, which could identify them.

Prosecutors said that people were detained to question their alleged involvement in corruption in the European Parliament, as well as forgery and use of false documents.
